National Pit Bull Awareness Day (NPBAD) is a day of appreciation and education designed to change perceptions and stereotypes about pit bulls and their responsible owners. NPBAD was established to educate and foster positive communications and experiences in the communities in which we and our dogs live, and it is an initiative dedicated to restoring the image of the American Pit Bull Terrier.
NPBAD was started in 2007 by Jodi Preis of Bless the Bullys, a pit bull rescue and education group in Middle Tennessee. When Bless the Bullys introduced the idea of a nationwide pit bull awareness day, the response was overwhelming! It was immediately recognized as an opportunity to educate, change minds, and bring about positive media attention to pit bulls across the country all on one day.
Despite the overall positive reception, Preis initially received criticism from some for using the generic term "pit bull" in naming the nationwide effort, however, the term was chosen deliberately, and is used for a very obvious reason. "Pit bull" is the name most familiar to the public, and the term that evokes a negative connotation of a particular grouping of dogs. The objective of NPBAD is, of course, to change that negative image.
The ultimate goal of NPBAD is to promote the truth about pit bulls. Knowledge is power, and with education and advocacy, the truth will save lives in terms of negating the fear and bias generated by the media, circumvent knee-jerk reactions such as breed bans, and the truth will result in fewer pit bulls ending up in animal shelters.
NPBAD is an annual event that takes place on the last Saturday in October. With the exception of the date, NPBAD is "unstructured" to allow those who participate to be as creative and have as much fun as possible with their ideas and celebrations. Through the years, we have seen some really creative and incredibly successful events!

Event: SouthWest Kansas Bully Walk
Location: Starting at Lyons Park (3rd and Brier) at 3PM on October 26, 2013
Event Contact Name: Dawn Meredith
Event Contact E-mail: email@example.com
Additional information: We are doing a group walk with our Pit Bull babies. We must follow all city ordinance guidelines: local dogs must be registered and insured, dogs from outside city limits must be insured, ALL dogs must be on a 6 foot or shorter leash, muzzled, and current on vaccinations. I MUST HAVE A COPY OF PROOF OF VACCINATIONS FOR EACH DOG PRESENT. We will follow DINOS (Dogs In Need Of Space) guidelines, each dog needs to be given adequate space while walking to avoid any nervousness in the animals and no face to face interactions (between dogs and people or between dogs) without first asking permission from the owner. And we need to pick up any waste from our animals to be courteous to other residents. We are looking to make this a positive event to show the city that our dogs have just as much right to be here as others and to promote the breed as the peaceful beautiful animals that they are. If you cannot follow the rules please do not attend; we have worked hard to get this approved by city officials and we do not want anything to encourage them to reinforce the ban or strengthen the existing regulations on our Pit Bulls. We will have police escorts to ensure the safety of our animals and to direct traffic during the walk. At the conclusion of the walk we will be distributing educational materials regarding Pit Bulls and BSL. We are also trying to set up a showing of "Beyond the Myth" for that day or at least the week leading up to the event.

Additional Information: Saturday, October 26, 12pm to 4pm; Special four-legged guests with "tails" of triumph over tragedy will be on hand to greet visitors including Piglet, the first animal to be helped in Massachusetts when animal cruelty was elevated from a misdemeanor to a felony and Cherry Garcia, one of the 22 Vicktory Dogs rescued from Michael Vick's property. Cherry has come a long way in his journey to overcome abuse. At the time of his rescue, Cherry, who was used as bait dog, was so emotionally shut that down that he would not walk. PLEASE NOTE: Due to my new work commitments and responsibilities, I have been unable to update the list of events for 2014. I apologize for any inconvenience, but would encourage those interested in taking part in NPBAD festivities to contact their local animal shelters and pit bull rescues as the list of participating organizations grows with every year!
